Are you having a mental block about charging others for your products or services?

Well, you’re not alone…I did at one point as well for a very short time.

Here’s what helped me to overcome that FAST (thx to a few mentors of mine):

Think of charging someone more like a portal. A portal that people MUST go through in order to take what it is your selling more seriously. Serious enough for them to actually take action on it.

When we get something for free compared to paying for something, 10 out of 10 times we treat what we paid for with more care. Also, we give an effort in making time to go through the product as opposed to getting something for free in which we may just toss it to the side and “get to it when we get to it”…Ah hem, Never 😉

If you feel good about what you’re selling, then you know without a doubt it will help your customers IF they utilize it.

Adding to that, I believe in over delivering. Envision the price of your product as a drop of water in an ocean but the value that your customers are getting is the ocean itself.

This will help you to feel good about the fact it’s absolutely okay to charge. Also realize if your vision is to continue serving and bringing value to others, you’d need the funds that you earn to continue providing more (your time, dev. Costs, biz. Expenses, etc.).

Remember, Money is an exchange of value.

Provide more value to earn more money.

  • I have been called the “Free Man” by my wife many times. I always put it down to helping others, had to get told many times before I realized that it was effecting us what i was doing by either not charging or doing things for free. Also i found most people did not appreciate what i did for them as much as they should of, the reality of what most are actually like sunk in then. I still do things for cheap or free a little but 2015 is all about changing this pattern!

  • Great message Rob! I struggled with this as well. And one thing I will add to your thoughts is this…

    If you’re struggling with feeling like you don’t have enough value to offer anyone, go out and add value to YOU first. Invest in yourself and as you learn more, do more and teach more, you’ll never have to worry about having the amount of value you give in exchange for charging :-).

  • Another great way of understanding the importance of what you do is this:

    Would you ask someone you go see, a doctor, a dentist to not charge you for the service they are providing? How about at the grocery store?

    Of course not. All these products and services have value and so do you and what you offer.

    I’m in insurance and when I was first starting out I had a hard time not offering everything I could for free or feeling bad about the cost of premiums. Insurance leverages your money so you pay little to get a lot and yet I felt guilty about the premiums people paid. Crazy to think this when you hand over a big cheque to someone.

  • You hit the nail right on the head there Robert. We suffered from that when we came online even though in our consultancy business we never had that problem. Strange but true.

    Now we know we offer value way above what we charge and have to be divorced from the results others achieve with what they buy from us. We have so many great testimonials we must accept there will always be some people who don’t do anything or get any results and look to blame someone else.
